The registration in the Stud-book
In Portugal, registration in the Stud-book requires:
1-DECLARATION
OF BIRTH/BIOLOGICAL SAMPLE TRACKING DOCUMENT
1.1 FILLED
BY THE BREEDER
In the accompanying
document of biological sample DECLARATION of BIRTH the creator
declares:
·
Sex
·
Name - whose first letter is sequential from the Portuguese alphabet
(without K, W and Y) corresponding to the year of birth and should not contain
more than 24 letters, signs or white spaces, to allow a correct computer
processing.
1.2 PADDING
BY VETERINARIAN
The veterinarian collects a sample of 10 ml of blood
in EDTA K3 tube, identified with a sticker provided by National Equine
Registration. The corresponding sticker is affixed to the biological sample
tracking Document DECLARATION of BIRTH, where he declares:
·
If the colt was seen "behind the mother"
·
The type of coat
·
Fire marks eventually made and their location
2-APPOINTMENT
OF FIRE
Traditionally, equines are fire branded. Liquid
nitrogen can also be used to cold markup, less practical and more costly
method, and no less painful for the animal.
3-ELECTRONIC
TAGGING AT THE VET
Electronic
identification is mandatory; the microchip is applied by the Veterinarian,
conventionally on the left side of the neck.
4-SENDING THE SAMPLES TO THE MOLECULAR GENETICS LABORATORY – MGL
Samples are delivered to the MGL – situated in Alter
Stud Farm, Alter do Chão, accompanied by the biological sample tracking document
DECLARATION of BIRTH. The NER, pointing out possible deficiencies found,
returns copy of this document to the creator and to the respective breeders'
Association.
5 - REGISTRATION IN THE STUD-BOOK OF THE RACE
After
assigning the Universal Equine Life Number (UELN), the equine will be in the Equidae
National Register (ENR) enabling the computerization throughout its existence.
6- UPDATE OF THE DOCUMENT OF IDENTIFICATION, BY THE ENR
Over the
life of the animal, the identification document will be updated by the Veterinarian,
whenever changes occur.
Diagram data
are indicated graphically and described in space "changes",
especially for the purpose.
